Abstract

This workshop teaches the basic skills needed to operate and manage an IBM i system.

The first day of the workshop covers IBM i concepts and user interfaces. You will learn how to sign on, navigate the IBM i menu structure, enter data, use commands, and perform other common tasks. You will learn how to access a system using a traditional 5250 workstation, using a terminal emulator, and using a personal computer with System i Navigator or IBM Systems Director Navigator for i, also known as the web console. Connectivity products covered include Telnet, FTP, Access for Windows, Access for Web, and NetServer.

Day 2 covers basic IBM i operations. You will see how to submit batch jobs, monitor and control their execution, and manage the printer output they create. The workshop also shows how to control interactive jobs, manage subsystems, control tape devices, and determine the jobs waiting for operator intervention. Both the green-screen and Navigator interfaces are covered.

The rest of the workshop covers system management tasks, including starting and stopping the system, managing devices and virtual media, taking backups, cleaning up system storage, applying PTFs, and reporting problems. While such tasks are not always the responsibility of the operator, they are frequently performed by senior operators under the direction of the system administrator.

The workshop ends with an overview of PowerVM, IBM's umbrella term for the collection of virtualization technologies that are available with its Power Systems family, including logical partitioning, Active Memory Sharing, Live Partition Mobility, virtual I/O, and others. The workshop covers these concepts and describes common ways in which organizations are using PowerVM to maximize their IT investments.

Labs

Lab exercises using Manta’s IBM i simulator are included in this workshop. To work the lab problems, you need to bring a laptop on which Internet Explorer has been installed.

This series is intended for the person responsible for operating an IBM i system. It is applicable both for new operators and for experienced personnel wishing to enhance their operational skills.

After completing this workshop, you should be able to:

  • Sign on an IBM i system, navigate through the menu structure, and enter commands or data using any of the following IBM i interfaces:
    • The traditional text-based (green screen) interface
    • Navigator for i
    • IBM Systems Director Navigator for i
  • Transfer files between a PC and an IBM i system using Access for Windows, FTP, or NetServer
  • Perform IBM i operations, including the following:
    • Send and display messages
    • Change your password
    • Display help information
    • Change your assistance level and library list
    • Navigate the root, library, and optical file systems
    • Display, and optionally execute, recently entered commands
    • Submit, hold, release, or cancel batch jobs
    • Hold or release a job queue
    • Hold, release, display, or delete spooled files
    • Start and stop writers, subsystems, or the entire system
    • Respond to system messages
    • Determine the status of jobs, output, printers, lines and devices
    • Manage tape and optical volumes, both real and virtual
    • Vary devices on or off
    • Perform common backup and restore operations and create an automatic backup schedule
    • Create storage utilization reports
    • Create an automatic system cleanup schedule
    • Determine the current release level of installed program products
    • Install a PTF package
    • Manage system-detected problems and respond to error messages
  • Describe how a partitioned system environment affects common operational tasks
